The Church of the Dormition of the Virgin in Labova e Kryqit, located in southern Albania, is one of the oldest and most significant Byzantine-style churches in the country. Built in the 6th century during the reign of Emperor Justinian I, it is celebrated for its impressive history and architectural beauty.
The church is renowned for its intricate stone masonry and its stunningly preserved frescoes, which date back to the 16th and 18th centuries. Its interior features detailed iconostasis and Byzantine-style murals, offering visitors a glimpse into the religious art of the time. The church was originally constructed to house a fragment of the Holy Cross, which drew pilgrims from across the region, giving the village its name “Labova e Kryqit” (Labova of the Cross).
The church’s peaceful, mountainous surroundings add to its spiritual significance, making it a popular site for both tourists and Orthodox Christian pilgrims. Despite suffering damage over the centuries, the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin has maintained its status as a cultural and religious landmark in Albania.
